The Perth Mint in Australia is famous for producing some of the most in-demand coin series in the world. A fixture of its production is the use of alternating designs each year, never relying on the same exact design to promote its coin programs. While the motif remains the same each year on coins such as the Australian Gold Kangaroo, the exact design differs to maintain peak levels of interest.
These ½ oz Australian Gold Kangaroo coins are part of a 5-coin series that features available weights of 1 kilogram, 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. While the Perth Mint has set unlimited mintage levels for the two largest coins, all of the fractional-weight coins have a limited mintage number set, with the 2016 ½ oz Australian Gold Kangaroo set for the lowest availability.
On the reverse side is the image of an adult kangaroo resting on its haunches. The silhouette of another kangaroo is visible in the background, while engravings around the image include “Australian Kangaroo,” and the coin’s year of minting, weight, purity, and metal content.
The obverse features the familiar design of Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley. Her Majesty’s effigy is surrounded by her name, “Elizabeth II,” the nation of issue, “Australia,” and the coin’s face value.
